UCLR honors Utah State Senator Luz Escamilla for her outstanding leadership, effective advocacy, and public service in Utah.
Sen. Escamilla was first elected to the Utah State Senate on November 4, 2008 and was re-elected in 2012 and 2016. Luz represents Senate District 1, which includes Salt Lake City’s westside and West Valley City. Born and raised in Mexico, Luz is the first immigrant elected to the Utah State Legislature and the only Latina in the Utah Senate where she serves in leadership as the Assistant Minority Whip. On issues such as education, health care, criminal justice, immigration, and the Utah Compact, Sen. Escamilla has been a steadfast advocate for Latinos across Utah.
Professionally, Luz works as the Vice President for Zions Bank’s Community Development Group. Luz earned her Bachelor of Science in Business Marketing and her master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Utah. She lives in Rose Park with her husband Juan Carlos and their children.
